Filmed at night on rooftops in Tel Aviv, NAZA is built around interviews with 24 anonymous Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel. Their faces and voices are digitally altered as they describe target selection, surveillance and AI-assisted systems used during the war in Gaza, as well as the civilian casualties they say were anticipated in some strikes. The title refers to Nezek Agavi (“collateral damage”), described in the film as the military term for the expected number of civilian casualties from an air strike.

Directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor are two of the four filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning No Other Land. Rather than relying on battlefield spectacle, they keep the camera largely in Tel Aviv and let the testimonies accumulate, asking how technological distance, bureaucracy and military procedure can affect individual moral responsibility.

NAZA has also become the center of a fierce controversy in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused those behind the film of incitement and antisemitism, while Culture Minister Miki Zohar called for the filmmakers’ citizenship to be revoked; the Israeli military said it would seek to identify soldiers who participated. The filmmakers have received threats, while Israeli human-rights and peace organizations and international film and press-freedom groups have defended their right to make and show the film.

Reviewers have also raised a separate journalistic question: because all 24 military sources are anonymous, some individual claims are difficult to test independently. The filmmakers say anonymity was necessary to protect their sources and note that much of the underlying reporting had already appeared in The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call. The dispute makes evidence, dissent and accountability part of the context in which NAZA is being received.
