On the Maasvlakte, the ‘mainport’ of Rotterdam, at the end of May 2009, Finnish multinational Neste Oil laid the first stone of its first large scale bio diesel plant in Europe. Production of 800.000 tonnes of NExBTL, a premium renewable fuel, mainly from palm oil, will start in 2011. Together with a similar sized plant in Singapore this makes Neste Oil the biggest player in the world. But can the use of “rain forest oil”, as Greenpeace aptly called the product’s main ingredient, lead to a truly sustainable transportation fuel as well?
A piece I did for European Energy Review, then their printed edition (2009)
