UMIO is the professional development branch of Maastricht University (UM). Its home is the School of Business and Economics (SBE), but its programmes and projects connect professional postgraduate initiatives across UM faculties to address the multidisciplinary challenges that many professionals and organisations face (see www.umio.nl).
About the M&C team
As part of UMIO’s Marketing & Communications (M&C) team, the Digital Communications Editor will work in a triangular collaboration with the Community Coordinator (events & social media) and the Online Marketing Officer (online systems, campaigns & analyses), while reporting to UMIO’s Manager Marketing & Communications. The DCE will also actively work together with the M&C team of SBE consisting of six persons, of which two are responsible for the external and internal communications.
The Digital Communications Editor (DCE) is responsible for creating and managing attractive communications to (1) raise brand awareness for UMIO, (2) stimulate demand for UMIO’s programmes and services, and (3) promote SBE’s research expertise towards business professionals and organisations. The DCE primarily operates in the context of UMIO and targets his/her work towards UMIO’s (potential) client base of business professionals and organisations, thereby working towards UMIO’s strategic objectives for future growth. However, part of his/her work also involves creating practical “translations” from science to business and contributing to the valorisation of scientific work through popularising predefined research themes within the corporate community.
Tasks and responsibilities
In this job, you will be responsible for creating eye-catching stories for all public channels of UMIO. You will coordinate creative content creation projects and liaise with fellow editors, corporates, programme managers, photographers and videographers to build attractive communication that illustrates the value of our School’s expertise to UMIO’s business community. Next, you will also actively work on research communication and raising visibility of SBE’s research themes by liaising with professors and other academics and converting seemingly complex matters into easily accessible content for outsiders. For this you will need to keep abreast of developments in the professional as well as the academic field.
Apart from the above, you will also contribute to building and applying editorial plans and frameworks, advising various parties on the use of communication within the organisation, and continuously measuring the effectiveness of communication to maximise the impact of your work. A great mix of operations, tactics and strategy!

• Bachelor’s (HBO/WO) degree in journalism, communications or related field
• 4-5 years of work experience in communication-related positions
• Sound writing and speaking skills in both English and Dutch
• Natural affinity with digital marketing and communication-related activities
• Experience with business-related communications
• Ability to turn complex information into accessible output
• Hands-on work mentality
Terms of employment
- a contract for a period of 12 months, after which an extension is possible
- a gross salary between € 2.835 and € 4.274 on a fulltime basis in salary scale 9 or 10. The salary will be determined based on relevant education and work experience.
