De Vrijheidslezing met Anabel Hernandez

Trudy Brandenburg - van de Ven — Geplaatst op vrijdag 1 december 2017, 10:05

Agenda dinsdag 12 december 2017, 20:00 - dinsdag 12 december 2017, 22:00 , De Balie, Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10, 1017 RR Amsterdam

De Balie is collaborating with Het Nutshuis Den Haag to host the 20th Freedom Lecture on Tour with Mexican journalist and writer Anabel Hernandez.

In Mexico, there is a great lack of social awareness and political will to intervene. Other regions have more experience on this matter. Guatemala, for instance, started in the 90’s with great searches for massgraves, identifying vicitims and perpetrators. In Colombia there is a similar process going on, which is part of the recent peace agreement between the government and guerilla. Could Mexico learn anything from these experiences? What needs to happen to turn the tides? And what chances can be found in the elections of July 2018?

These and other questions will be discussed with Anabel Hernandez, human rights tulip awardee Graciela Pérez Rodríguez and Kathryne Bomberger, director of the international commission for Missing Persons.

The moderator of the evening is Edwin Koopman. He will speak with Anabel Hernandez and two other guests who will be announced soon. Edwin Koopman is Latin-America correspondent and analyst for Dutch news outlets such as Trouw, VPRO Bureau Buitenland, NOS and Clingendael Spectator. The subject of his thesis was the earthquake in Mexico (1985). Koopman lived there for a long time and has been reporting on the war on drugs and Mexican politics for over 25 years.
